Setting limits teaches your children valuable skills they will use the rest of their lives. One day, they will report to a job where their ability to follow rules will dictate their success.

"Parents aren't the cause of ADHD, but they are part of the solution." (Kenny Handleman, M.D.)

Some hope their children will be like sponges soaking up the truth and wisdom imparted by their parents. However appealing this philosophy might be, it seldom seems to catch on with their children.

A tantruming toddler is a little ball of writhing muscle and incredible strength. It's like trying to carry a greased pig past a slop bucket.

We should not medicate the boys so they fit the school; we should change the school to fit the boy. (Leonard Sax, M.D. Ph.D)

The more 2 parents differ in their approaches to discipline, the more likely it leads to trouble for the child.

You cannot reason with someone who is being unreasonable.

The teenage years require a delicate balance between the young person's need to gain independence, and the parent's need to retain authority.

"The thing that impresses me most about North America is the way parents obey their children"    (King Edward VII , 1841-1910)

Whining and crying are employed by kids for the purpose of getting something. If it works, then it was worth the effort and will be repeated.

Brain Fact # 7

Learning and Cognition

Most organisms begin life with all of the processing systems and information that they need to survive. Humans are a notable exception in that an adult-size brain is significantly larger than a mother’s birth canal. So, we are born with an immature brain that develops additional mass and capabilities during its twenty year post-birth developmental trajectory. Parenting, mentoring, teaching, and mass media are examples of the cultural systems that humans have developed to help young people master the knowledge and skills they need to survive and thrive in complex environments. Learning is one of the main activities we do, even if many times we are not aware of it.

CLASSROOM & HOMEWORK TIPS for SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

On the continuum of activity level, some children are on the low end and some children are on the extreme level. Somewhere along the spectrum, depending on whose opinion it is, a given child may be diagnosed with ADHD. Parents and teachers need to know that there is no such thing as an objective test for ADHD. Whether we call them children with ADHD or not, the principles and techniques for dealing with them are the same as for all difficult children.
